Abha Khatua surprised national record holder Manpreet Kaur as she won the women’s shot put gold medal at the Kosanov International Athletics Meet, a World Athletics Continental Tour (bronze) event, here on Saturday.
The 26-year-old Khatua had a best effort of 16.71m while Manpreet, who recently improved her national record at the inter-state national level in Chennai to 18.06m, earned her a place in the Commonwealth Games squad. Series and could only manage a poor 14.24m with her lone legal throw.
Meanwhile, R. Vithya Ramraj clocked a personal best of 56.87s in women’s 400m hurdles, while T. Santosh Kumar (men’s 400m hurdles) and 400m national record holder Mohammad Anas also clocked 45.21s.
Kiran Pahal won the women’s 400m title in 52.54s, a time that was close to her best at the national level this season, while 4x400m mixed relay bronze medalist Sumi at last year’s Under-20 Worlds in Nairobi won Season’s best clocked a time of 53.70. s.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Anees (Men’s Long Jump), Kirpal Singh (Men’s Discus Throw), Navjit Kaur (Women’s Discus) and KM Chanda (Women’s 1500m) won gold medals in their respective events.
