“After the BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh, we changed Faizabad to Ayodhya and Allahabad to Prayagraj. Under these circumstances, why should Hyderabad not be renamed as Bhagyanagar?” Amidst thunderous applause, Adityanath had made the gesture during a rally.
Telangana leaders of BJP’s parent organization RSS have also demanded renaming of Hyderabad to ‘Bhagyanagar’.

When it comes to the name Hyderabad, it is said to be associated with Hyder, the son of the Sultan and according to popular folklore in Telangana, Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah fell in love with a local prostitute named Bhagmati. It is believed that, in his honour, the city was named ‘Bhagyanagar’.
