Guest teachers are involved in the drive to bring drop outs back to school in the age group of 6 to 14
Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP), a non-governmental organization, has arranged for a guest teacher in 750 government and government aided private schools across Karnataka for 2022-23.
SKDRDP Executive Director LH Manjunath said in a release that providing guest teachers in government and aided schools has been a part of SKDRDP’s Gyandeep Shiksha program launched in 1989, under which assistance is provided to meet the basic needs of schools. which includes repairs, purchases of school buildings. Desk and drinking water facilities. “Initially we provided guest teachers in schools in Dakshina Kannada. For the last three years, we have been providing guest teachers in schools in other parts of the state.
Out of the teachers arranged this year, 231 are single teacher schools. The guest teachers are given a monthly honorarium of ₹5,000 by the NGO. “Guest teachers are arranged to maintain 1:40 teacher student ratio in schools,” he said and added that SKDRDP is trying to ensure that the number of students in rural areas due to shortage of teachers Education should not be affected. “These young guest teachers will get a good experience of teaching children,” he said.
Apart from teaching, guest teachers are involved in the drive to bring back school dropouts in the age group of 6 to 14 years. They visit homes and ensure that children who have passed class 5 get enrolled in class 6 in upper primary school. Shri Manjunath said that the teachers are working towards improving the attendance of the students and ensuring that the students of the village go to school.
Shri Manjunath said that so far Rs 11 crore has been spent on payment of honorarium of guest teachers. He said that a total of Rs 43.81 crore has been spent so far under Gyandeep programme.

Meanwhile, the state government has allowed government schools to take the services of guest teachers, depending on the number of students, till December 2021. A total of 955 guest teachers have been appointed for government primary schools in Dakshina Kannada this year in three phases. In the first two phases, 764 and 152 guest teachers were appointed respectively, while recently 39 guest teachers have been hired. An official of the Department of Primary and Secondary Education said that a total of 189 guest teachers have been taken for government secondary schools.
