President Ram Nath Kovind’s term ends on July 24 and India is all set to elect its 15th President today. The question is, is India all set to have its first female tribal president?
NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu, a tribal leader, is pitted against opposition candidate former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha.
Draupadi Murmu, a Santhal tribal by birth and hailing from Odisha, left a secure government job in 1997 to successfully contest the election of a councillor. In the same year, he was appointed the vice-president of the Scheduled Tribes wing of the BJP.
With the support of regional parties like BJD, YSRCP, BSP, AIADMK, TDP, JD(S), Shiromani Akali Dal, Shiv Sena and JMM, Draupadi Murmu’s vote share is likely to reach nearly two-thirds, making her a shoe-top for constitutional post.
