Private telecom operator firm Reliance Jio has consolidated its lead in the Indian telecom market as it garnered over 31 lakh mobile subscribers in May, says the sector regulator on July 19.
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) monthly subscriber data, Reliance Jio gained 31.11 lakh wireless subscribers, taking its mobile subscriber base to 40.87 million.
However, Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel added 10.27 lakh subscribers in May, taking its mobile user base to 362.1 million. Whereas, Vodafone Idea lost 7.59 lakh wireless subscribers, and its subscriber base declined to 25.84 crore in the same period.

Earlier on July 18, the data published by the Department of Telecommunications said that Reliance Jio has deposited Rs. 14,000 crore as earnest money as it is participating in the auction of 5G airwaves. Whereas, Bharti Airtel deposited 5,500 crore, and Vodafone Idea deposited 2,200 crores. Adani Data Networks deposited a small amount, viz. 100 crores only.
According to the data of the Department of Telecommunications, on the basis of the earnest money, bidders become eligible and they get such points from which they can bid for spectrum. Reliance Jio has 159,830 eligibility points, Bharti Airtel has 66,330 points, Vodafone Idea has 29,370 eligibility points and Adani has 1,650 points.
So, Jio can bid for spectrum of maximum price 1.27 lakh crore, Bharti Airtel may bid for maximum 48,000 crore spectrum for Vodafone Idea 20,000 crore, and Adani Data Network 700 crores.
5G spectrum auction to begin on July 26 and government is looking forward to its collection 80,000 crores 1 lakh crore as revenue in the form of its sales.
