International Moon Day 2022: Why is it celebrated on 20 July only?

International Lunar Day 2022: The opening ceremony of International Moon Day will take place on 20 July this year. On 9 December 2021, the United Nations General Assembly recognized a resolution submitted by the Moon Village Association and several other groups within the organization. The application was submitted to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

The day will celebrate one of the most memorable moments in human history. On July 20, 1969, American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to reach the Moon. This was the first time a human had set foot on the surface of the Moon.

Upon landing on the surface, having written history with a million eyes, Neil Armstrong jumped down the ladder and said, “It’s one small step for one man, one giant leap for mankind.” Apollo 11 astronauts used a lunar module called Eagle to reach the surface.

From that day on, Moon exploration efforts began to take shape and the lunar planet became the destination of countless missions. The landing of 20 July 1969 is a milestone in space exploration.

International Moon Day will be held annually and aims to educate and promote the need for the sustainable use and exploration of the Moon and the rules for activities on and around the lunar planet. These events will be organized internationally with a top-down (opening ceremony) and bottom-up approach (other global events).

These events will not only target the younger generation and general public through educational activities, but they will also cover space communities such as NGOs, government agencies and laboratories among other institutions. The International Moon Day, supported by UNOOSA, will also aim to promote international cooperation regarding the use of outer space and matters relating to it to be dealt with by the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).
