BS Yediyurappa can never retire: Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai

This announcement of BS Yediyurappa seems to indicate the end of his electoral politics.

New Delhi:

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday said senior BJP leader BS Yediyurappa can never retire and the party will contest the 2023 assembly elections under his guidance.

Mr Bommai’s remarks came hours after Mr Yediyurappa announced that he was vacating his Shikaripura constituency and would not contest the next election. Mr Yediyurappa also said that his son and party’s state vice president B Vijayendra will contest the 2023 assembly elections from Shikaripura.

The former chief minister’s announcement seems to signal the end of his electoral politics.

Asked under whose leadership the party would contest the next elections in Yeddyurappa’s absence, Bommai told reporters, “He never retires. Yeddyurappa never retired. His strength and guidance will remain in the next elections.”

He also mentioned that Mr Yediyurappa is a “patriarchy” and central leaders are aware of it.

The next assembly election in Karnataka is to be held in May 2023.

Mr Bommai is in the national capital to attend a farewell dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind.

The Chief Minister of Karnataka also met the elected President Draupadi Murmu and congratulated him.
