The deck has been cleared for implementation of Rs 100 crore Chennai Shoreline Rejuvenation and Revitalization Project, covering a distance of 30 kms between Marina and Kovalam, Tamil Nadu government agrees to set up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Is. Project.
This project has been conceived for several reasons. Despite the city having a natural and long coastline, access to the beach is not continuous, but rather fragmented into sections. The issue of conservation from the point of view of climate remains unresolved. In addition to the Marina and Elliot (Besant Nagar) beaches, there are about 20 other disconnected shores that are under-utilised. A 3 km stretch along the coast faces less erosion and a 7 km stretch faces less accretion.
“Although the level of erosion and accretion is low, it is time to start environmental protection and effective management of the beach,” said an order issued by Housing and Urban Department Principal Secretary Hitesh Kumar Makwana on Monday. Development (HUD).
To be implemented in phases with the participation of all stakeholders, the project is likely to utilize the physical and social infrastructure and connect fragmented stretches of beaches as esplanades to promote arts and culture. Upon assessment, activities such as conservation of flora and fauna, setting up of bio-fences to deal with rising sea levels and creating shoreline parks with salt-tolerant species can be undertaken.
It is proposed to identify key nodes along the stretches for development as public spaces with specific themes and designs. The problem of pollution will also be solved. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) will consider extending the revitalization of the shoreline beyond Kovalam.
The Principal Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department will be the chairman of the SPV. The Member-Secretary of CMDA will be the Chief Executive Officer. Other members include Additional Chief Secretary (Environment, Climate Change and Forests); Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation; Member-Secretary, State Coastal Zone Management Authority, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and State Planning Commission; Managing Director of Urban Housing Development Board and Tourism Development Corporation; and director of the National Center for Coastal Research and the National Institute of Ocean Technology.
SA Sannasiraja, Professor, Department of Ocean Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, is one of the members.
The CMDA will initiate the process of selection of a consultant to prepare a comprehensive shoreline development plan, the government order said.
