Star lifter Mirabai Chanu (49kg) put up a record-breaking performance, claiming four of them in a power-packed performance, to claim India’s maiden gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on July 30, 2022.

In a remarkable performance, Chanu broke Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records in the snatch.

He broke sports records in clean and jerk as well as total lift.

The former world champion finished with a total lift of 201 kg (88 kg + 113 kg), a far cry from her personal best.

He equaled his national record lift of 88kg in the snatch category.

The Olympic silver medalist, who is working on her snatch technique, then attempted the much-awaited 90kg but could not complete it.

Sporting her famous ‘lucky’ earrings in the shape of Olympic rings, Chanu lifted more than twice her body weight (109 kg, 113 kg) in the clean and jerk, holding the world record (119 kg) .

Mauritius weightlifter Mary Hanitra Roilya Ranivosoa won the silver medal in 172 kg (76 kg + 96 kg).

Canada’s Hannah Kaminsky 171kg (74kg + 97kg) also finished on the podium.

With this Chanu added her third Commonwealth Games medal to her kitty by winning silver and gold medals in the Glasgow and Gold Coast editions respectively.
