The Big Bang Theory Explained The Noida Twin Tower Blast

On August 28, following the Supreme Court order, the Supertech illegal twin towers in Noida were razed within 10 seconds by the authorities. More than 3,700 kg of explosives were used to trap the Apex and Cayenne towers.

Despite explosives and much care, there were issues over what method to use to safely demolish the Apex (32-storey) and Cayenne (29-story) towers. After detailed discussions, the authorities chose a demolition method known as the ‘waterfall implant’ technique.

What is Waterfall Implosion Technique?

The ‘building implosion’ technique is one in which explosive material is strategically placed and its detonation is timed, causing the structure to be demolished within seconds with minimal physical damage to its immediate surroundings.

Why was it chosen?

This process can take months or even years to achieve its goal as compared to other typical methods. However, officials often choose it, citing lower cost, shorter time and greater security. The same happened with the supertech illegal twin towers in Noida.

Another reason for choosing this method was the Supreme Court order which said that the buildings should be constructed in the shortest possible time and there should be no disturbance to the neighboring residents.

How it works: Process Involved

In the process, the structure collapses in and of itself. This requires explosives and detonators. To accomplish this process, expert engineers deftly remove a building’s supporting structure at a certain point that brings it over itself.

After removing a building’s supporting structure, explosives are drilled into the building’s major components that support the structure at various levels from bottom to top. Later it is detonated at a fixed time with adequate safety and security.

Precautions to be taken by the officials:

a) Over 5,000 residents of Emerald Court and ATS village were evacuated.

b) About 2,700 of their vehicles will also be removed from the premises.

c) An exclusion zone was created within a radius of 500 meters around the twin towers, in which no human or animal was allowed in the surrounding area.

d) Over 3,700 kg of explosives detonated the Apex and Cayenne towers.

e) Deployment of trucks and dumpers to clear more than 80,000 tonnes of debris in the shortest possible time.
