Chennai: two monkeysSimilar to Marmosets, which were smuggled Thailand found dead by customs Detective at Chennai airport recently.
When contacted, customs officials said that the incident took place on August 23 and they had to dispose of the bodies on the same day to prevent the spread of any kind of infection.
Customs officials said the man who smuggled the monkeys has been arrested and further investigation is on.
Sources said that the accused had brought the animals by hiding them in plastic boxes. Sources said that he may have died either of suffocation or from an overdose of sedatives.
“It was a regrettable sight to see the animals dead. We immediately informed the wildlife officials. They came and identified the animals. The animal quarantine staff suggested that the animals be disposed of,” said an official.
Customs Department provides transport facility to quarantine staff to take dead animals to incineration facility Chengalpet and burn them.
Customs officials said they take utmost care whenever they capture live animals and feed them whatever is acceptable to them. They will be sent back after ensuring that they will not face any complications till they return to their natural habitat, an official said.
