The NEET qualifying cut-off is at a three-year low, with experts claiming that there is tough competition to get a seat in the top medical colleges as a record number of students clear the exam.

Contrary to the prediction of NEET experts, the marks required to clear the medical entrance exam has seen a drop. This year, anyone who scored 117 and above was considered to have passed NEET. This is a drop from last year when students required 138 marks in the unreserved category to pass. For people from reserved categories, there is a huge drop and anyone with a score of 93+ is considered passed as opposed to 108 last year.

NEET has a relative marking. This means that the highest score obtained by a student in a given year is considered as the best score and the marks of the remaining students are considered with reference to the toppers score. From last two years toppers are getting 720 marks or full marks whereas this year top rank holder has got 715 marks. Since a drop in the topper’s score is observed, so get the qualifying marks.

Last year the 50 percentile score for the unreserved category was above 138 marks. It was less than 147 in 2020 and 134 in 2019. This year’s score is the lowest in recent years, however, it does not mean that the cut-offs of top colleges will see a big drop.

“Suffice it to say that the cut-off for top colleges may be lower than last year considering the number of qualified students. It will be a little tough to compete with. However, we must also consider the fact that the number of seats for medical has also increased this year. Hence, it will not have any major impact,” said NM Habib, MD, Narayan Group, head of NEET wing.
