Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that the two newer versions of COVID-19 – XBB and XBB1 – are more contagious than the former. He requested everyone in the state, especially the elderly or those suffering from co-morbidities, to be careful and wear masks properly to protect against the virus.
The Health Minister also stressed on the importance of booster dose of vaccination and asked all elderly people, people with co-morbidities and healthcare workers to get booster/precautionary doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
He informed that at present the virus cases are decreasing in the state and they are regularly sending Covid-19 samples for genetic testing to check the presence of new variants. The minister further said that about 1.8 per cent of those infected with the new forms may require hospitalisation, but as of now there is no cause for concern.
As the state is also reporting multiple cases of influenza, a separate set of guidelines will be issued, the minister informed.
India is seeing a slow increase in cases COVID-19 For the past several days and with the current festive season, people are expected to gather in large numbers, which may increase the spread of the virus. The daily cases in the country have been hovering around 2400 hundred for the past few days and yesterday also, 2,401 new cases were reported in the country, taking the number of active cases of infection to 26,625.
