Pakistan may pull out of ODI World Cup if India refuses to travel for Asia Cup

BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced that the Indian cricket team would not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023, later threatening to pull out of next year’s World Cup in India.

According to the decision of the Executive Board of the Asian Cricket Council, the next edition of the Asia Cup next year is scheduled in Pakistan and Jay Shah has said: “India will play the Asia Cup at a neutral venue.”

With reports of Jay Shah’s decision being published in the media, another report claimed that the Pakistan Cricket Board is contemplating pulling out of the 50-over ICC World Cup in India.

“PCB is now ready to take tough decisions and play hard ball because it also knows that ICC and ACC events will face commercial liabilities and losses if Pakistan does not play India in these multi-team events.” Senior OCB Source.

Apart from global or continental events, India does not play Pakistan since 2008. Pakistan last visited India in 2012 for a six-match white-ball bilateral series. India last visited Pakistan in 2006.

According to the previously released FTP, Pakistan is scheduled to host two major ICC events in the next three years – the Asia Cup (which will be a 50-over format before the 2023 World Cup) and the Champions Trophy in 2025.

This is the first time that the country has been rewarded with the hosting rights of two major ICC events. However, the BCCI’s decision for a neutral venue cannot be viewed with a sense of congratulation and it is highly anticipated that the reactions of the PCB and other officials may differ.

Due to the political tension between India and Pakistan, the bilateral series between the two countries has been canceled several times.
