CBI registers nine cases related to post-poll violence in West Bengal

“Based on the information provided by the state police, more cases are expected to be registered in the coming time,” the probe agency said.

Following the direction of the Calcutta High Court earlier this month, the CBI has so far registered nine cases related to the post-poll violence in West Bengal.

“Four teams formed to investigate the cases are in West Bengal. The statements of the victims are being recorded. Based on the information provided by the state police, more cases are expected to be registered in the time to come,” said a CBI official.

During the day, a CBI team visited the residence of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar, who was reportedly killed in the post-poll violence. The CBI officers along with forensic experts spent a lot of time at their home in Kakurgachi area of ​​Kolkata. He spoke to his brother Biswajit Sarkar. Another CBI team went to Bhatpara in North 24 Parganas and visited the residence of BJP worker Jai Prakash Yadav, who was allegedly killed in the post-poll violence.

Earlier this year, the CBI had written to the Director General of Police seeking details of the cases of alleged murder and sexual abuse of women after the assembly elections.

NHRC report

The court issued the directions on the basis of a report submitted by a committee of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

“As per the report of the committee, in all cases, where the allegations are about murder of a person and attempt to rape/rape against women, they will be referred to CBI for investigation. The committee, NHRC, any other commission or authority and the state shall forthwith hand over the complete record of the cases entrusted to the CBI for investigation,” the five-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court said in its order on August 19.

The CBI has been asked to submit the status report to the court within six weeks.
