Days after being reprimanded by BJP MP Parvesh Verma for allegedly using a “toxic” substance to defame Yamuna ahead of Chhath festival, Delhi Jal Board’s quality control director Sanjay Sharma took a bath in the river. A video went viral on social media in which the DJB officer can be seen taking a bath in the water of Yamuna river kept in a container.
Sharma’s move comes after BJP leaders Parvesh Verma and Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga criticized DJB officials for spraying defoaming substances in the Yamuna river.

Meanwhile, later AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj, vice-president of DJB, posted a video of the heated conversation on Twitter. In the video, Parvesh Verma was seen arguing with Sanjay Sharma over spraying defoamer, which he termed as “poisonous”. He also challenged Sharma to take a dip in the river.

Sharma had also lodged a complaint with Kalindi Kunj police station on Friday. According to Sharma’s complaint, Verma “used a lot of abusive language and misbehaved with me. He is also spreading false propaganda that I am mixing poison in the Yamuna river waters in connivance with DJB officials.”
Defending DJB’s stand on spraying the chemical, Sharma said it is not poisonous. It is a food grade chemical that is also used in cosmetics, he said. “I welcome Purvanchali devotees to take a dip in the river without any fear,” Sharma told the media after taking a bath.
AAP and BJP are targeting each other over the polluted water of Yamuna ahead of Chhath Puja. Meanwhile, according to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), it is not allowed to immerse any offerings in the river as part of Chhath celebrations.
