Assembly by-elections have started in six states on Thursday, November 3. People’s queues have started in the seven assembly seats where by-elections are being held today. The six bypoll seats are Gopalganj and Mokoma (Bihar), Adampur (Haryana), Andheri East (Maharashtra), Dhamnagar (Odisha), Manugoda (Telangana) and Gola Gorakhnath (Uttar Pradesh) respectively.
In the seven seats where the bypolls are being held, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had three seats, the Congress two, while the Shiv Sena and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) had one seat each.
While victory in the by-elections would be irrelevant to their position in the legislatures, the parties have not taken the election lightly and have run a high campaign.
Counting of votes will take place on November 6.
Uttar Pradesh: Gola Gokaran Nath by-election
Here, on September 6, after the death of BJP MLA Arvind Giri, a by-election had to be held. The main contest in Gola Gokarnath constituency is between Aman Giri of BJP, Arvind Giri’s son and Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate and Vinay Tiwari, former MLA of Gola Gokarnath.
Arvind Giri joined the BJP before the 2017 elections and contested against Tiwari of the SP from his native constituency.
Riding on the Modi wave and his grassroots support, Giri snatched the seat from the SP in 2017 and retained the seat in the 2022 elections.
Issues related to farmers, including sugarcane arrears, crop procurement and floods, figure prominently during elections.
Voting begins in seven seats in six states
Voting is being held in Mokama and Gopalganj assembly constituencies of Bihar, Andheri (East) in Maharashtra, Adampur in Haryana, Munugode in Telangana, Gola Gokaran Nath in Uttar Pradesh and Dhamnagar in Odisha.
