JEE Main scam: 7 arrested including lab technician, peon for hacking the examination hall of coaching center

In the ongoing investigation under the JEE Main scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested seven including two lab technicians, an assistant professor and a peon working in a private college of engineering in Haryana’s Sonepat.

The four have been accused of rigging the JEE Main 2021 exam in connivance with the directors and staff of Affinity Education. The two directors of Affinity Education were earlier arrested by the CBI and remanded to custody till September 9.

The CBI in its investigation has found that the exam console and computer at the Sonepat center were hacked and controlled remotely from places like Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. The arrested staff members of the Sonepat center have allegedly assisted in the hacking in lieu of money. 12- 15 lakh was paid by each candidate who cleared the exam and got a seat in the National Institute of Technology.

The CBI said that the accused used to obtain class 10th and 12th mark sheets, user IDs, passwords and post-dated checks of aspiring students as security. Once the admission was done, they used to collect huge amount ranging from 12 to 15 lakh rupees (approx) per candidate. Money transfer is also being investigated from the hawala angle.

According to sources, the suspects who are being questioned told the CBI that students from across the country were asked to choose Sonipat as their exam centre. “Even though the candidate was in Maharashtra, he was asked to choose Sonipat as the examination centre. The staff here turned a blind eye to the fact that an expert sitting in some other part of the country took the exam on behalf of the student.

A huge quantity of incriminating documents and equipment including 25 laptops, seven computers, around 30 post-dated checks as well as PDC mark sheets of various students were recovered by CBI during raids in Delhi-NCR, Indore, Pune, Bengaluru and Sonipat. .

A CBI statement last week said, “Conspirators were facilitating the scam by solving the question paper of the applicant through remote access from a chosen examination center at Sonipat (Haryana) in view of the huge amount of money.” .’
