The IFS officer shared a cartoon on his Twitter handle which shows a man standing on top of a structure, dominating other living species. He comments on how the first one is a major extinction.

When we talk about the environmental crisis, most of its issues remain unheard because we rarely take any major steps or contribute to it which can ultimately bring about ‘change’. Whether it is overexploitation of natural resources or rocketing human population, the list of problems related to Earth is endless. And one such big debate that is going on around us is about mass extinction. For centuries we have been arguing how the increase in human population leads to a decrease in the habitat of other living beings due to our ‘selfish’ and non-sustainable attitude. However, our tendency to be resistant to everything other than ‘us’ is even older.

We have almost turned a blind eye to scientists and environmentalists warning us about the risk of our extinction, which is imminent due to the ongoing threat of climate change. However, the unique way of an IFS officer warning us about the same will definitely grab our attention and make us question whether such dominance is sustainable for us too. To our dismay (and carelessness), the answer is a big no!

Indian Forest Service officer Parveen Kaswan shared a cartoon on his Twitter handle, in which a man is standing on top of a structure that looks like a house made of cards. It refers to living on land and dominating other living species, taking their place in nature to fulfill their ‘own’ desires. The composition depicts a man standing over other species including birds, animals, insects etc. While this would compel us to remark ‘Why should we care about the extinction of others?’ Every first mass extinction resulted in the extinction of a dominant species.

The social media post thus delivered a powerful message ‘how dominance does not hide reality’. Users started commenting on the post and reacted to the much needed solution to the environmental problem. One user wrote, “Minimalism and antinatalism is what our generation needs.” While another wrote, “Warning call”. Others were also keen to weigh in on the issue as they filled the comments section with their responses.

Isn’t it high time we wake up and realize that before Mother Nature gives another violent warning to sit back and cry?
