Roster removed for SpiceJet pilots having gujiyas and drinks in cockpit

SpiceJet has sacked two of its pilots after they allegedly had gujiyas and drinks in the cockpit while flying on Holi. The incident reportedly took place on March 8 on a SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Guwahati. The whole country was celebrating the festival of colours. Now, a picture is going viral on social media, in which one of the pilots is seen holding gujiya, a traditional Holi sweet, along with a beverage in a paper cup on the center console. We also saw another gujiya kept near the cup.

As the picture went viral, it was said that the pilots put the safety of the passengers at risk. India Today reported that both the pilots have been removed from the roster and an inquiry has been initiated into the matter. A spokesperson for the SpiceJet airline said that the company has a strict policy for consumption of food inside the cockpit, and the same has to be followed by all flight crew. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken after the completion of the probe, he said.

Twitter has also condemned the “horrible and extremely unprofessional behaviour” of the SpiceJet pilots.

“Samosas and tea at 37000ft, cruising at 0.79M! Even a horoscope can’t save you when there is an emergency,” said a user.

Another wrote, “It’s hard to imagine this could happen in a cockpit, let alone on the ground, let alone in flight.”

People highlighted how the engine would have stopped working if even a little bit of liquid had gotten in there. “If it sputters, many things can go wrong, including engine shutdown. This is a serious issue,” said a person.

“The lack of professionalism in this cockpit is shocking. But have to share this with the world,” read a tweet.

“Liquid around electric yikes,” tweeted another.
