After a commendable stint at Delhi Capitals for 7 years, former captain Shreyas Iyer is all set to leave the franchise ahead of 15.th Indian Premier League Edition (IPLAccording to a report in Times of India, the right-handed batsman is keen on getting a leadership role, which seems unlikely after Rishabh Pant successfully led the franchise to the playoffs this year.
So, looking at the introduction of two new franchises – Ahmedabad and Lucknow – from next season, Iyer will go into the auction to make himself available.
After making his debut in 2015, Iyer has been a key force in the Delhi camp. He took over the captaincy role in 2018 after Gautam Gambhir decided to step down in the middle of the season. Since then, he has been an accomplished captain, leading his team to the playoffs twice. Under his leadership, Delhi Capitals played the final against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020, but lost by 5 wickets.

Before he could continue his stint in 2021, he suffered a shoulder injury during a home series against England in March, which kept him out of the India leg of the tournament. In his absence, Rishabh Pant was made captain, who did an exceptional job and retained the position even after Iyer returned for the UAE leg.
Under Pant’s leadership, DC finished the league stage as the table toppers with 20 points. However, their journey in the tournament came to an end with consecutive defeats against Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Earlier, Iyer had said that he respects the franchise’s decision to continue with Pant as the DC captain.
“It is part of decision making from the franchise or whatever decision they have taken, I respect the fact and Rishabh has been leading well from the beginning of the season and thought he should be continued till the end of the season. And I fully respect the decision,” Iyer said again.
