‘Higher cost of commercial LPG will lead to diversion of domestic cylinders’

Consumer activists and distributors are concerned that the recent increase in the prices of commercial LPG cylinders will lead to illegal diversion of domestic cylinders. In Chennai, the price of a commercial cylinder, which was ₹1,831 last month, rose to ₹2,133 this month.

Consumer activist T. Sadagopan said such a huge increase would lead to cylinders being sold in the black market. “Already, there are complaints that domestic cylinders are being illegally refilled at fuel outlets. This can be seen happening in the bunk on the outskirts. This is a dangerous thing and the increase in prices will lead to diversion of domestic cylinders as they are cheap. Families who cannot buy domestic cylinders are turning to wood stoves. They will see a good business opportunity in this situation,” he said.

Restaurants Are Struggling

A source in the hotel industry said that after more than 18 months, the condition of small eateries is returning to normal.

An LPG dealer said that they have suffered a lot during the pandemic and small establishments are not clearing the dues. “We provide them credit as they can make payments only after their day to day business. We cannot have zero balance. Such a sharp increase will help competitors, especially private companies. They do not extend on the first of every month, but provide a few more days for the customers,” he said.
