The Indian palate is dominated by two primary tastes, namely sweet and spicy. We can’t do with both of these, and our food choices exemplify this fact. While some people cannot eat spicy, sweet is everyone’s friend. From kids to adults, from joyous occasions to out-of-the-blue events, sweets are a common choice and ingredient.
Naturally, the demand for sugar in the country is very high. Unfortunately, with high demand, the chances of adulteration increase manifold. As a result, our body’s susceptibility to various diseases and ailments also increases. And the main reason for these diseases is the increase in the amount of urea.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently shared an incredibly simple hack that can help you find out whether the sugar you are consuming at home is adulterated with urea. You only have two things to test, i.e. sugar and water, and you can detect adulterated sugar sitting at home.
Here’s how you can check if the sugar you’re using is pure:
- Fill a glass of water.
- Mix one teaspoon full of sugar in water.
- Stir it moderately and wait for the sugar crystals to dissolve completely in the water.
- Now once you have made the solution, bring it near your nose and whisk it well.
- If you smell ammonia after smelling the sugar solution, then your sugar is adulterated with urea.
For those who are not well acquainted with the smell of ammonia, the smell is a very strong, pungent odor, similar to urine or sweat. FSSAI has also mentioned that this method is applicable in case of use of artificial sweetener along with sugar.

According to medical experts, urea, also known as carbamide, can cause life-threatening diseases including kidney failure. So the next time you bring home a new packet of sugar, be sure to spoon through this simple one because when in doubt, test it.
