International Day of Tolerance is celebrated every year on 16 November. It is a United Nations declared day that aims to create public awareness about the dangers of intolerance. What inspired this idea was the growing need to ensure that people were aware of the negativity that could arise from intolerance. As a result, it was introduced by the United Nations General Assembly to promote tolerance among the general public and educational institutions.
In 1995, the United Nations declared a year for tolerance. The Declaration of Principles on Tolerance was prepared by UNESCO on 16 November of the same year. The United Nations decided to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 125th birth anniversary by kickstarting the commemoration of International Day of Tolerance in 1995.
Madanjit Singh, who was the UN Goodwill Ambassador (later in 2000) sponsored the celebrations that year. Madanjit had contributed immensely in bringing about communal harmony and peace through his lifelong commitment to practicing tolerance.
Therefore, this annual observance also marks the anniversary of that announcement. As a part of this noble initiative UNESCO introduced an award to promote the spirit of tolerance or non-violence through their behavior and to honor individuals working in different fields (science, arts, culture). This is the UNESCO-Madanjit Singh Award.

To take home the fact that tolerance is a universal human right, International Day of Tolerance encourages an open mind and listening.
