Facebook India’s Director of Public Policy, Shivnath Thukral and Director (Legal) GV Anand Bhushan have been asked to appear before the Peace and Harmony Committee of the Delhi Assembly on November 18 (Thursday) in connection with the February 2020 Delhi riots.
In a statement, the committee said that the committee had issued summons to Facebook India to express its views on the important role of social media in preventing the spread of false, provocative and malicious messages, which may incite violence and disharmony.
The meeting of the committee headed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Raghav Chadha will be held on November 18 at 12.30 pm in the Delhi Assembly.
The committee has so far heard seven witnesses examining the role of social media in relation to the North-East Delhi riots in which over 50 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured in February 2020.
In view of the transparency, the proceedings of the committee will be telecast live, the statement said.
At least 53 people were killed and hundreds injured in clashes between supporters of the Citizenship Amendment Act and those opposing it between February 23 and February 26, 2020, in northeast Delhi.
