IMF confirms Pakistan funding issue didn’t come up for voting

The International Monetary Fund has officially confirmed that the May 9, 2025, decision by its Executive Board to provide additional funds to Pakistan did not come up for a vote and was instead a unanimous decision. India abstained from this unanimous decision, citing Pakistan’s “poor track record” in utilising such funds.

Zero tolerance for terrorism, India will never give in to nuclear blackmail: Jaishankar in Germany

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Berlin said on Friday (May 23, 2025) that India has zero tolerance for terrorism and New Delhi will “never give in to nuclear blackmail,” referring to the cross-border links to the Pahalgam massacre. In his remarks at a joint press conference with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul after holding talks with him, the External Affairs Minister also said, “India will deal with Pakistan purely bilaterally” and there should be “no confusion in any quarter” in that regard.

Woman arrested after 12 injured in stabbing at Hamburg railway station

Germany police on Friday said they had arrested a woman after at least 12 people were injured in a knife attack at the main station in the northern city of Hamburg. Around 6.30 p.m. (9.30 p.m. IST), Hamburg police said on X they were carrying out a major operation at the main train station in Germany’s second-largest city. “A person injured several people with a knife at the main train station” and a suspect had been arrested, they said.

71% Indians experienced severe heatwave in last 12 months: study

A survey conducted across Indian cities found that 71% of Indians have experienced severe heatwaves. The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC) and CVoter (an international survey company headquartered in New Delhi) surveyed 10,751 people above the age of 18 from December 5, 2024, to February 18, 2025. The survey revealed that Indians have recently experienced extreme heatwaves, floods, water shortages and irregular monsoon patterns. These events not only harm lives and livelihoods but also shape how people perceive both climate change and extreme weather, the report said.

Federal judge blocks Trump administration from barring foreign student enrolment at Harvard

A federal judge on Friday blocked the Trump administration from cutting off Harvard’s enrolment of foreign students, an action the Ivy League school decried as unconstitutional retaliation for defying the White House’s political demands. In its lawsuit filed earlier on Friday in federal court in Boston, Harvard said the government’s action violates the First Amendment and will have an “immediate and devastating effect for Harvard and more than 7,000 visa holders.”

4 Maoists with ₹18 lakh bounty killed in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli

Four Maoists, including two women, carrying a collective bounty of ₹18 lakh, were killed by security personnel in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli on Friday (May 23, 2025), police said. The encounter took place along the Maharastra-Chhattisgarh border barely 25 km from the site where 27 Maoists, including Nambala Keshav Rao, alias Basavaraju, general secretary of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), were killed in an encounter with the Chhattisgarh Police’s District Reserve Guards two days ago.

Delhi reports 23 COVID-19 cases, issues advisory to hospitals

The national capital has reported 23 COVID-19 cases, prompting the Delhi Government to issue an advisory asking all hospitals to prepare for availability of beds, oxygen, medicines and vaccine. On Friday (May 23, 2025), Health Minister Pankaj Singh said that 23 COVID-19 cases have been reported till Thursday (May 22, 2025) and the government is verifying the details whether patients are residents of Delhi or have travel history outside the city.

Young Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari dies saving fellow soldier in Sikkim

A 23-year-old officer commissioned into the Army just six months back, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari of Sikkim Scouts, lost his life while saving a fellow soldier during an operational task in north Sikkim on May 22, 2025. Army officials said that the officer was leading a Route Opening Patrol towards a Tactical Operating Base (TOB) in Sikkim — a key post being prepared for future deployment.

Turkiye arrests 65 soldiers, police for ties to late Erdogan foe

Turkiye arrested 65 soldiers and police officers early on Friday (May 23, 2025) over alleged ties to the late preacher Fethullah Gulen, who was accused of masterminding the failed 2016 coup. State news agency Anadolu said 56 active-duty soldiers from the Turkish armed forces had been arrested, with another seven still being sought.
