RBI to use banknotes chopped in making particle boards

Mumbai, May 29 (PTI) To make banknot disposal more environmentally friendly, the Reserve Bank will use chopped banknotes to create a particle board and as per its annual report released on Thursday, has started a process for Empanell Board makers.

In its report, RBI said that the amount of banknote briquettes or paper compressed blocks produced every year in India has increased to about 15,000 tonnes, and is looking for greenery options for disposal.

Traditionally, most central banks and other officials disposed of chopped banknotes in the in -charge of currency management in landfills or through consumed, which is not environmentally friendly.

The report stated that RBI conducted a study by Wood Science and Technology Institute of Wood Science and Technology, which is an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to search for some alternative solutions.

“The study established that the currency made with briquette particles would suit the technical requirements of the board particle board,” the annual report states.

The annual report states that it has initiated a process for the harmony of particle board manufacturers, which will buy briquettes for final use in the form of partial replacement of wood particles in their boards.

The Department of Currency Management will “actively” its initiative towards finding a more environmentally friendly ways for the disposal of Banknotes Shred/Briquettes.
