100 years ago: The monsoon in Bombay

Bombay, June 2: To all appearances, the monsoon has burst in Bombay. At about 11 p.m. last night the storm burst with frenzied force and heavy rain fell for nearly two hours. Afterwards it drizzled with smart showers from time to time till this afternoon, when there was another heavy shower. The night’s rainfall flooded many low-lying parts of the city. Full six inches of rain have been registered in the last 24 hours up to 5 this evening.

In the Bombay Harbour the sea is very rough today. Small launches or barges dare not go out to the ships lying in stream. A signal has been hoisted in Ballard Pier indicating the approach of a storm. The steamer Baron Fairlie, which arrived here from Cardiff to-day, reports having met with a moderate monsoon from Socotra.
