After the suicide of a NEET student from Tamil Nadu, the issue of candidates from rural India not being eligible for the central medical entrance examination has surfaced once again. People have started trending #BanNEET on microblogging site Twitter. NS The 19-year-old medical student was from a rural area in Tamil Nadu and was the son of a farmer. The Tamil Nadu government has been taking up the issue of NEET not being fit for children from socially, geographically and economically disadvantaged sections with the central government for a long time.
Academics have also taken to Twitter and are demanding a ban on NEET. They claim that the test is unfair. Many do not agree with the concept of having a centralized examination. Apart from the central JEE Mains, engineering students also get a chance to appear in the state level entrance exam. This option is not available to medical students. Earlier colleges like AIIMS and JIPMER used to have their own entrance exam, but now the same comes under the purview of NEET. Academics claim that this puts more pressure on the students.
Examination is not bad, but just one test cannot decide our ability whether I am a good doctor or a bad doctor. We don’t need NEET it is just a complicated paper which gives struggle and pain to everyone. And why students are not able to clear it only in TN. We are much better. #banneet

It became a big outrage when Sushant Singh Rajput was hanged. But what about the students who lost their lives? What justice do we students get? Who do we contact? #BanNEET_SaveStudents #banneet pic.twitter.com/R9i8E3G5Tt

Many people also claim that it is not examination but a change in the education system is needed.
Yet what we want is a government that does not think about the possibility of having a board cum entrance exam, and keeps talking of banning an exam for votes. yes we wanted #bunnit But years hv jus spent with politicians using it. it will just keep repeating with suicides

What kind of society are we becoming?#bunnit trending. What about the candidates who have given their time and labor in this exam? It’s not organization or exams, but social and family pressures we’re imposing on young minds.- Sayan_Culer (@TheMessiah6821) September 12, 2021
