A 22-yr-old mother, a 7-yr-old daughter — 2 Hathras victims laid to rest at makeshift crematorium

Hathras: The last remains of a 22-year-old woman from the Jatav community and her 7-month-old daughter, who died in a stampede in Hathras in Uttar Pradesh were brought to a makeshift crematorium Wednesday in a small truck after their family claimed it was denied access to an ambulance.

Tuesday was the first time the mother and daughter attended a satsang (religious congregation) addressed by self-styled godman Narayan Sakar Hari.

The gathering quickly turned chaotic, resulting in 121 deaths.

The incident occurred along the Etah Highway, bordered by an open field on one side and fields on the other. The satsang drew around 2 lakh attendees. As the ‘godman’ finished his sermon and moved towards the highway, a surge of people rushed towards him causing those on the highway to be pushed into the lower fields, about 4 feet below.

The majority of attendees were women, predominantly from the Jatav community, with fewer from other communities. The ‘godman’ claimed to be an incarnation of Vishnu and offered solutions for domestic issues including family disputes and alcoholism.
