The late Chairman Emeritus of Bajaj Auto, Rahul Bajaj will be remembered by the nation for his contribution to the automobile sector, Indian industry and our national debate on industrial policy. He pioneered the two-wheeler business on multiple tracks, not letting the habit of monopolistic-dominance under the license raj stifle the success of Bajaj Auto once the rivalry intensified. Most of all, he spoke his mind in a way that was widely valued, even if his critical reviews have at times ruffled the feathers of our rule-makers.
In 2019, Bajaj identified as insufficient confidence among corporate leaders in appreciating the government’s candid response. In the early 1990s, when Bajaj would be heard by the media airing the views of the “Bombay Club”, his views on liberalization of the economy captivated us. His assessment of that policy change will improve, reflecting an openness to new evidence. Also influential in shaping public opinion. Nearly a decade later, he stirred a discussion with a scathing expression of skepticism over the benefits of a business-friendly regime that was not equally good for macroeconomic growth. Will miss Bajaj’s voice a lot.
