Nagpur: On the eve of becoming a Defense Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU), Armaments factory Chanda (OFC) handed over the first batch of Electronic Intelligent Anti Tank Mine Mk 11 to the Army. Sources said that this is the first of its kind fully indigenous product which has been given to the land forces.
The project was conceived almost a decade ago but progressed slowly till last year. With disturbances on the Chinese front as a reason, the factory focused its efforts on making mines. It finally delivered its first batch of a few hundred mines on Thursday. It has bulk production orders to deliver around 20,000 mines over a period. With all the hurdles cleared, the factory is confident to meet the commitment on time.
From Friday, the OFC will be part of Munitions India Limited (MIL), one of the seven DPSUs carved out of the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), which has been dissolved. MIL, which is based in Pune, marks the beginning of a new era of growth as well as growth with an emphasis on innovation, research and competitiveness.
Conventional mines operate on pressure, and are closed only when the wheel of the tank passes over it. Electronic mines named Adrushya can sense the tank and explode. A conventional mine cannot explode if the tank passes over the tank without touching the wheels. Sometimes, the pressure is not enough to shut down the mine. Adrushya can sense the presence of a tank from about 1.5 meters away. Therefore, even if the tank passes by, it may explode. An OFC official said that the mines also have a mechanism to beat the mine clearance system.
The mines are based on designs by DRDO’s laboratories – Ordnance Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL). Army has been using this type of mines but it has been procured from foreign source. An official said that it will now be a completely indigenous item.
However, the journey from design to production had its obstacles. Several initial troubles plagued the project. The designs also had to be adapted to the production process. The project was given a boost after IOFS officer Rajeev Puri took over the project in June 2020, leading to the delivery of the first batch.
Puri trained in Explosive Ordnance at Cranfield University in the UK, and has now taken over as the chairman of Yantra India Limited (YIL), a DPSU headquartered in Nagpur, which has eight factories under it. He is also an alumnus of National Defense College, New Delhi.
Ravikant Maheshwari will now head MIL, which now owns OFC. The technical details of the mine were presented during the delivery ceremony by the Additional General Manager at Chanda, Sanjeev Bhola.
Nagpur-based Economic Explosives Limited (EEL), a subsidiary of Solar Group, has also received transfer of technology (TOT) of the mine to trace its construction.
