On the same day, when Ashok Gehlot (right) will be showing his might, Pilot will tour key constituencies. (PTI file)
The Congress is worried that an angry Gehlot may harm the party during the elections. But to deny Pilot would be to backtrack on the Gandhi family’s assurance to Pilot that his time will come.
Despite showing unity between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot in Bharat Jodo Yatra, peace has not returned in Rajasthan Congress. There is to be a show of strength in both the camps on the same day. CM Gehlot is organizing a kind of ‘Chintan Shivir’ with his cabinet colleagues to take stock of the work done by his government.
The focus is clearly not on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alone, but on the central leadership to tell them that they have a stranglehold on their government and that their supporters within the government will never accept a regime change.

As time passes, the pilots don’t want to let go of the opportunity to show their might. So on the same day, when Gehlot will be showing his strength, Pilot will visit key constituencies starting from Nagaur, which are mainly Jat dominated areas. By calling a Kisan Mahasammelan, Pilot will tell the central leadership with numbers that he is not such a leader who can be ignored now. Also, their strategy is to ensure that it does not look like a rebellion, as Gehlot will lash out at them, accusing them of dividing the party for the BJP’s benefit.
Back in Delhi, it is a decision the central leadership is scared to make. Gehlot cannot be ignored as he has stood up to the central leadership in the past as seen during the presidential elections. The Congress is worried that an angry Gehlot may harm the party during the elections. But to deny Pilot would be to go back on the assurance given to Pilot by the Gandhi family that his time will come.
Also, in 2024, with the BJP clearly eyeing a young nation, ignoring Pilot will give the impression that the Congress doesn’t want to take any risks and look young.
So what is the party planning to do? There are chances that no CM face will be announced for the 2023 state elections. Also, Pilot could be made the head of the campaign committee, which means he will shape the election plan.

As Jairam Ramesh recently said: “We will take a decision that will be good for the organisation.”
It doesn’t tell much. But it is clear that the Bharat Jodo Yatra has not been able to connect the warring leaders in the desert state. The storm is far from over.
