“These independent candidates took a major chunk of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) votes which could have come to us and our margins could have increased significantly. But they wanted to protest like this,” Dharmapuri said.

According to the MP, turmeric, known as “yellow gold” in the state, decides the fate of the five assembly constituencies.

Dharmapuri says that majority of voters in Balkonda are turmeric farmers, while in assembly constituencies like Armur, Koratala and Jagtial, 35 to 25 percent voters are turmeric growers. Nizamabad (rural) has 10 percent of such population.

With the Turmeric Board’s refusal and the Center rejecting the demand for paddy procurement, the TRS has opened a front against the BJP in the state. Dharmapuri, however, has published a list of initiatives taken by the central government for turmeric growers.

The BJP MP has alleged that TRS tried to misuse the issue of paddy procurement and protested in the name of farmers.

With the assembly elections in mind, the Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to reassure turmeric farmers that it has done more for them, despite the Center not accepting their demands for a separate turmeric board.

“A regional office opened in Nizamabad has more power than the board to meet the needs of the farmers. The prices of crops have increased. A special train for turmeric farmers has been started for Sangli,” said Dharmapuri.

The party is also targeting the Reddy community which is significant in numbers and mainly turmeric farmers. Add this to the weaving community and it is around 30 per cent of the vote.

Senior party leaders believe that assembly elections The state is likely to see politics at the root of crops next year.

“When it comes to livelihood, all other differences are erased. Farmers become one, and become one force,” said a senior state leader.
