AAP accuses Delhi govt. of halting widow pension

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of “not disbursing” the monthly pension to widows and women in distress since coming to power in Delhi.

The Delhi government provides a monthly pension of ₹2,500 to women who lack adequate means of subsistence, including those who have been divorced, abandoned or deserted.

A senior officer said physical verification of 3.5 lakh pension beneficiaries is under way, and so far over 20,000 women have been found to be ineligible for the monthly grant. “Due to this, March’s pension, scheduled to be disbursed by April 15, is pending,” said the officer.

Hitting out at the ruling party, AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged, “Women who have been receiving this pension for many years are now being targeted by the BJP government. The pensions of a large number of women are being stopped.”
