AAP MP Sanjay Singh sentenced to 3 months in jail for 2001 protest in UP city

Sultanpur: A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district has sentenced five others, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh and former Samajwadi Party MLA Anup Sanda, to three months in jail in a 21-year-old case. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1500 on him. The MP-MLA court gave its verdict in the case registered on 19 June 2001.

The AAP Rajya Sabha MP said he would appeal against the sentence in the high court.

According to the police, people had blocked roads and staged massive protests against the then BJP government in Uttar Pradesh led by Rajnath Singh. The protest was against regular power cuts and improper water supply in Sultanpur city.

Public prosecutor Vaibhav Pandey said the police had registered a case against Sanjay Singh, Anoop Sanda, supporters Vijay Kumar, Kamal Srivastava, Santosh Kumar and Subhash for blocking the road and protesting. A case was registered against them under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly) and 341 (wrongful restraint).

Singh, who was present in the court when the verdict was pronounced, blamed the then BJP government for mismanagement of the otherwise peaceful protest.
