Delhi Acid Attack: In a heart-wrenching incident, a boy threw acid on a 17-year-old schoolgirl in Delhi’s Dwarka district on Wednesday morning. According to reports, the incident took place at around 7:30 am and the victim has been referred to Safdarjung Hospital. According to the Delhi Police, it received a call at around 9 am regarding the incident of acid attack on a girl in PS Mohan Garden area.

During the incident, her younger sister was also with the victim, when two bike-borne youths fled after throwing acid. Police said it has sent its officers to the hospital and will brief the media about the details of the incident. So far, the police said that at least one of them has been arrested and investigations are on to nab the other.

There are around 250-300 cases of acid attack in India every year.

Notably, cases of acid attacks are on the rise in India despite the Supreme Court banning the sale of over-the-counter acid in 2013. According to a report in This Week in Asia, there are 250-300 acid attacks in India every year. However, the actual figure is likely to be higher as some incidents are not reported. Hearing a petition, the apex court termed acid attacks as “worse than murder” as the victim was left with almost no way to start her career.

In 2013, India made acid attacks a specific criminal offense and later, the Supreme Court ruled that victims should receive free medical treatment and a minimum compensation of Rs 3,00,000.
