Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) The Academic Council has recently decided to conduct the admission through Common University Entrance Test (CUET) from the next academic session 2022-23. Currently, JNU enrolls students through JNUEE. The move to adopt a new gateway has not gone down well with the administration. The JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) and the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) have expressed their opposition to the decision.
Several students also took to various social media platforms to express their dissatisfaction over the issue. Some have also sought clarity from the university, “if PG admission will also be conducted through CUET.”
During the deliberations in the Academic Council, a large number of members including Deans of Schools, Center Presidents and external members of the Council emphasized that “CUET will provide a level playing field to many deserving students across the country thereby reducing the burden . Taking multiple entrance exams”.

In an official statement, the administration said that the decision to adopt CUCET was “strongly supported” at the meeting. But the JNU Teachers’ Association says something else. The university said that the 159th Academic Council meeting recently endorsed the decision to use CUCET for admissions, which was taken in the 157th meeting held on March 22.

“During the deliberations in the Academic Council, a large number of members including Deans of Schools, Center Presidents and external members of the Council emphasized that CUCET will provide an equal opportunity to many deserving students across the country….” added this.
Refuting these claims, JNUTA said that they had no coercive agreement with the decision, instead allowing several people to express their views on the decision. JNUTA said, “After the members ended the meeting without allowing them to speak despite raising their hands, it is ironic that the university administration claimed ‘overwhelming’ support for all the decisions taken in the Academic Council meeting held today. while issuing a press note.” said.

Soon after the recent announcement, several student unions also opposed the move. Critics have claimed that the university’s VC “imposed” the decision on the students.
JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh alleged that the CUET decision was “imposed” in an autocratic manner. “Nevertheless, the JNU Academic Council crossed all limits to bulldoze the decision-making process. Autocratic ways to impose decisions,” she tweeted.

Another Twitter user claimed that,
Those who stamped this decision in AC, they either have no understanding about the nature of teaching in JNU or are mostly from science, technology, engineering, who do not have the ability to see beyond the formula.- Amita (@amita37687008) 12 January 2022
Terming the move as “authoritarian”, JNUSU wrote to the president saying it would lead to loss of autonomy and transparency.
He said that the members of the Academic Council have pointed out that there was no discussion on CUET during the Academic Council meeting in March last year. “More importantly, when the Additional Agenda was sent on January 10, 2022, 111 faculty members asked the Academic Council to discuss the agenda items at the School (BOS) and the Center (Faculty Committee) for further deliberation. The Vice Chancellor not only laid the paper on the table but also did not let the people raise apprehensions regarding the adoption of CUET.
He said that even though the members raised issues regarding the unique nature of the university and their respective centres, the VC gave no room to their concerns and suddenly silenced the speakers.
