The Andheri (East) seat fell vacant after the death of Lakke, a two-time MLA. The ruling BJP and Shinde faction have fielded former BMC councilor Murji Patel while Uddhav is likely to field Latte’s wife Rutuja Latte. Party supremo Sharad Pawar told reporters in Pune that the NCP would help the Shiv Sena in the bypolls.
Andheri East assembly constituency is one of the 26 constituencies of Mumbai Suburban District. It is a part of the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency. Latke snatched the seat from Congress in 2014 and was represented by Suresh Shetty of Congress in 2009.
Another performance on Dussehra
Meanwhile, preparations are on for two important Dussehra rallies by Shiv Sena and Shinde faction. Police said that tight security arrangements have been made across Mumbai.
Uddhav will address Shiv Sena’s October 5 rally at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai, while Shinde’s faction has organized its Dussehra event at MMRDA grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex near ‘Matoshree’, the former CM’s private residence.
“Thousands of people are expected from across the state for both the rallies and hence, arrangements have been made to ensure law and order and deal with any untoward incident. A police official said that additional security arrangements would be made by the local police as well as other units.
Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre Patil said his team visited Shivaji Park and BKC to take stock of the security arrangements at the venues. Police said tight security measures have been put in place as there is a possibility of rival factions coming face to face, which could lead to law and order problem.
According to the police, Shinde’s security cover was increased recently due to a threatening input. The CM visited the MMRDA ground and took stock of the preparations for the 5th October event. “I have visited the venue (at BKC) and preparations are in full swing,” he said. Lakhs of people will come from across the state for the rally and all departments are working to ensure that they do not face any problem. Our preparations will be completed tomorrow (Tuesday) and this rally will be successful.”
Shinde camp spokesperson Sheetal Mhatre said preparations were close to 80 per cent and that 4,000 to 5,000 buses had been booked to ferry supporters to the rally venue.
At Shivaji Park too, the Uddhav Thackeray-led camp is making its preparations for the rally – making a stage and making seating arrangements. The top leadership of the Uddhav faction held a meeting at Shiv Sena Bhawan, the party headquarters in Dadar, to take stock of the ongoing preparations.
