AICTE translates 218 engineering books into 11 regional languages

NS All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Announced that 218 engineering books for first year students of undergraduate and diploma programs have been translated and reviewed by 226 authors.

“Language will no longer be a barrier for students who aspire to become engineers,” AICTE wrote on Twitter.

Earlier this year in July, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had said that 14 engineering colleges in eight states of the country will offer B.Tech course in five regional languages. Offering education in regional languages was one of the key recommendations of the National Policy on Education (NEP) 2020.

BTech programs will now be taught in 11 regional languages. These include Hindi, Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, Malayalam, Telugu, Assamese, Punjabi and Oriya. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu had already welcomed the AICTE decision.

The education ministry had also appointed two committees to study and examine the feasibility of engineering courses in regional languages. However, the concept is not new as Anna University of Chennai Already offers civil and mechanical engineering courses in Tamil in 11 colleges. Students studying in these colleges have the option to write their exams in either English or Tamil.

Earlier, in some of his speeches and addresses, Prime Minister Modi has also stressed on the need to uplift the mother tongue. He stressed that education should be given in regional languages also. Therefore, AICTE and UGC had organized a series of webinars to discuss ways to strengthen Indian languages.
