Air India, Emirates, ANA cancel some US flights over 5G rollout

New Delhi Air India, the Emirate of Dubai, Japan’s All Nippon Airways on Tuesday suspended some flights to the United States amid a 5G wireless deployment plan starting Wednesday. Airlines said they were either canceling or changing flights on some US-bound flights.

The move comes in the wake of operational concerns related to the planned deployment of 5G mobile network services in the US.

Air India said in a tweet that due to the deployment of 5G communications in the United States, its operations from India to the US have been curtailed/modified with effect from January 19, 2022, with a change in aircraft type.

The airline stated that it would not be able to operate the following flights as of 19 January 2022: AI101/102 DEL/JFK/DEL AI173/174 DEL/SFO/DEL AI127/126 DEL/ORD/DEL AI191/144 BOM/EWR/BOM .

The airline further said that passengers flying from Delhi to Washington DC on Wednesday till AI103 will be operated as per schedule.

Separately, the Emirates of Dubai and All Nippon Airways of Japan have also suspended some flights to the US, citing uncertainty over the rollout of 5G services, news agency Reuters reported.

ANA said on its website that it was acting in response to a notice from Boeing to airlines banning the use of its 777 long-range airliner amid industry concerns about radio interference.

Meanwhile, AT&T and Verizon Communications on Tuesday agreed to temporarily shut down some wireless towers near major airports to prevent disruption to US flights.

The two companies said they would launch new C-band 5G wireless service on Wednesday, but agreed to delay some deployment near airports.
