The Congress, the main opposition party in Assam, has claimed that the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) should be disbanded soon and Ajmal should remain a businessman. This comes after the AIUDF’s defeat in the recent by-elections to five constituencies.
Speaking to News18, working president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), senior Congress MLA, Zakir Hussain Sikdar said, “I think Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is going to dissolve his party AIUDF soon. He is a very intelligent businessman and he knows very well how to handle his business. Ajmal should close his party after the massive failure in the by-elections and continue his business all over the world.”
He said that since its birth, Congress has been working for the people in a secular manner. “But AIUDF led by Ajmal is doing religion based politics in Assam as BJP is doing all over the country. The people of Assam are now well aware of his disgusting politics.”
The BJP and its ally UPPL had won all five seats in the recent by-elections to five assembly constituencies – Gosaigaon, Tamulpur, Bhabnipur, Mariani and Thaura. BJP candidate Sushant Borgohain won from Thaura assembly seat by a margin of 30,561 votes. BJP’s ally UPPL candidate Jiron Basumatary won the Gosaigaon seat by a margin of 28,252 votes and Jolene Daimary won the Tamulpur constituency by over 50,000 votes. BJP candidate Phanidhar Talukdar won Bhabanipur seat by a margin of 25,641 votes and Rupjyoti Kurmi won Mariani seat by a margin of 40,104 votes.
The Mariani and Thaura seats were won by BJP’s Rupjyoti Kurmi and Congress’ breakaway Sushant Borgohain. Two-time MLA Sushant Borgohain with the Congress switched to the BJP in August, while Kurmi, a prominent leader of the tea tribe community and a four-time legislator, switched sides in June. Phanidhar Talukdar, the first AIUDF MLA, switched to the BJP in September.
In the last by-election, the AIUDF had contested two seats from Bhabnipur and Gosaigaon, but had to face defeat in both the seats. There was a face-off between the Congress and the AIUDF after the bypoll results were announced. Congress working president Zakir Hussain Sikdar claimed to have dissolved the AIUDF, while AIUDF’s Ashraful Hussain, the youngest MLA of the Assam Assembly, said, “Congress should perform its duties as an opposition party and fight against the BJP.” Must fight We know, Congress is a big party in the country and they should put up a strong barricade to defeat BJP, which is hijacking Congress MLAs. We are fighting for the poor people and for their justice. They (Congress) should not fight with us, AIUDF is a small party.
After the massive success in the by-elections in the Northeast, Assam Chief Minister and Convener of NEDA (North-East Democratic Alliance), Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “In all the states, it is a victory for the NDA and the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). Under the visionary policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the people of the Northeast have reposed confidence once again. This victory is not a simple victory. In each of the five seats in Assam, we won by margin, giving us the opportunity to win the assembly elections. It was a victory for BJP’s development in the state.”
