The Twitter dispute between Bollywood star Ajay Devgn and Kannada star Kiccha Sudeep over what is the national language of India has now taken a political turn. Apart from Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, no one himself got into controversy by saying that the states of India are made on the basis of languages. On 7 April, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presided over the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language. Speaking on the occasion, he said that ‘Hindi should be accepted as an alternative to English and not to the local languages.’ Shah also stressed the need for ‘primary knowledge of Hindi for students up to class IX’. Shah’s remarks drew sharp reactions from opposition parties like Congress, Shiv Sena, DMK and Trinamool Congress (TMC). The old debate resurfaced due to the first Twitter exchange between Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and Kannada actor Kiccha Sudeep over which tongue qualifies as the “national language”, or, national language of India.
