New Delhi: Budget airline backed by billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala akasa air took to the skies on Sunday with its launch flight from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

Appreciating the speed with which the airline was approved and the ease of doing business of the Modi government, Jhunjhunwala said in his own unique style at the Mumbai airport launch ceremony on Sunday: “Nowhere in the world is there an airline that can do business in 12 months. Have been born. Normally a baby is born in nine months. It took us 12 months. (It is said) ‘India has very, very bad bureaucracy’. But the support we have got from the Ministry of Aviation is unbelievable.
Vinay Dubey, Founder and CEO of Akasa, said: “It is wonderful to continue to democratize air travel. This is the first time in nearly eight years that we have a new Indian-registered livery on a jet aircraft. After a very long time we have is a professionally operated, professionally owned airline. We live in an India where career professionals like me and many of our fellow founders can actually dream of starting an airline in a highly exemplary and capital-intensive sector. Central Aviation Minister JM Scindia flagged off the first flight.
Akasa Air is starting flights between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. It will add cities and routes to its network as the fleet size increases. akasa So far has announced five routes with five cities including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Bengaluru and Chennai.
The airline plans to add two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft every month. It seeks to establish a strong pan-India presence with a focus on tier 2 and 3 route connectivity from the metro. The fleet size will be increased to 18 aircraft by the end of March 2023 and over the next four years, the airline will add 54 aircraft, taking the total fleet size to 72.
