Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday likened the Lakhimpur Kheri violence to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and said the British opened fire from the front, while the BJP ran on a jeep from behind.
Yadav, who is in Rae Bareli on a two-day visit as part of the seventh phase of the ‘Samajwadi Vijay Yatra’, claimed that the BJP would be wiped out in the upcoming 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
Talking to reporters here, the former chief minister said, “In Uttar Pradesh, there was an incident of a jeep ramming on farmers. If the pages of history are turned, one remembers the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the British opened fire (at people).’ ‘ But, BJP crushed the jeep from behind. No action has been initiated against the accused. Union Minister of State for Home (Ajay Mishra) has not been removed yet. Bulldozers over the houses of those who are facing charges. It has not been run. This government is working in a discriminatory manner.”
Violence erupted in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3 when farmers were protesting against Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to Mishra’s ancestral home. In the violence that followed, four agitating farmers were crushed by a vehicle, while four others including a journalist and two BJP workers were also killed. Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra has been made an accused.
The SP chief also said that as elections are approaching, the BJP uses the lens of religion and looks at everything from that point of view. Yadav reiterated that under the BJP regime people have faced ‘dikkat’ (problems), ‘kilat’ (shortcoming) and ‘jilat’ (humiliation) which they have not faced in any other government.
He also said that people are feeling humiliated today and the BJP which is in power is insulting the people.
