Prayagraj: The ashes of former Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh Yadav were immersed in Sangam on Wednesday.
His son and former CM Akhilesh Yadav performed the rituals in the presence of the entire family including Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party chief and his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav, Akhilesh’s daughter Tina and son Arjun, Shivpal’s son Aditya and former MP Dharmendra Yadav. Earlier on Monday, the Yadav family had immersed a part of Mulayam’s ashes in the Ganges in Haridwar. The SP Vice Chancellor breathed his last on 10 October at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram (Haryana). He was 82 years old. His last rites were performed on October 11 in his native village Saifai in Etawah district.
The district administration had set up a special platform at the Sangam for the smooth conduct of the rituals. Before the bone immersion, family members led by Akhilesh Yadav performed various rituals led by priests Pradeep Pandey and Utsav Shukla on a specially constructed platform in the middle of the river at the holy confluence, where a large garlanded picture of Mulayam Singh Yadav Was. put up.
Mahant Balbir Giri, the head of the Baghambari Gaddi Math was also present during the rituals. Senior SP leader and former minister Revathi Raman Singh was also present on the occasion.
On Wednesday morning, the SP chief took off from Saifai airport in Etawah in a private plane and landed at Bamrauli airport in Prayagraj at around 11.40 am. From the airport, Akhilesh Yadav and other family members reached Sangam, where only close family members were allowed to pay their last respects at the VIP Ghat. The Yadav family then took steamers and motorboats to reach the platform set in the middle of the river at the Sangam for the rituals.
After the ritual, Akhilesh immersed the ashes of Mulayam Singh Yadav, standing in waist-deep water at the confluence of Ganga-Yamuna, amid Vedic slogans. He was then joined by other family members, who all together took a dip in the holy water and completed the ritual.
