On the other hand, in an attempt to keep Kurmi voters in its favour, the BJP has forged an alliance with Anupriya Patel’s Apna Dal(S). In the 2017 UP Assembly elections, Apna Dal (S) contested 11 seats, winning nine of them. This time BJP has given 17 seats to Apna Dal(S). Patel will have to prove himself as the leader of Kurmis by winning the maximum number of seats.
Meanwhile, Dr Sanjay Nishad of Nishad Party, who is also an ally of BJP, has been given 16 seats. Nishad claims that out of 403 seats in UP, 160 seats are dominated by community voters. In 2017, the party fielded 72 candidates, but won only in Gyanpur. This time too he is facing a tough test.
The SP is eyeing backward votes through BJP ministers Swami Prasad Maurya and Dara Singh Chouhan, who had defected recently. This time also SP has fielded both the leaders. Also, SP has Krishna Patel, mother of Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal (K). AnupriyaMaking the competition of a daughter versus her mother.
Krishna Patel-led Apna Dal (K) faction is in alliance with SP, while Anupriya Patel-led Apna Dal (S) is in alliance with BJP. Anupriya’s sister and Krishna’s daughter Pallavi has been fielded by the SP against Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya from Sirathu.
