In 2017, California-headquartered Alphabet laid the foundation for its mission to build ‘Everyday Robots’. Realizing that robots in today’s era are heavily dependent on program code written for a specific task, the company entrusted its arm, ‘X the Moon Factory’, to developing robots that would allow humans to perform their daily tasks. be able to assist.
Recently, the company announced that they have deployed 100 ‘Everyday Robots’ in the company that can learn on their own and adapt to the environment of the establishment, breaking the paradigm where robots are the only ones in a particular environment. are able to function, 9To5Google reported.
Clearly, the Everyday robot developed by the Moon factory can adapt to the phenomenal factors around them and act accordingly. “Everyday robots can safely operate in human environments where things change every day, obstacles are visible from anywhere, and people can appear unexpectedly,” said Alphabet’s X. Robots use a combination of machine learning techniques such as collaborative learning, reinforcement learning, and a wide range of sensors to perform tasks and transfer the intelligence acquired in the virtual world to the real world.
Every day, the robot has a large wheelbase at the bottom and multiple cameras on top. Robots sense their surroundings using Light Detection and Ranging Sensors, colloquially called spinning LiDAR sensors. It uses lasers that ping objects and return them to the robot, allowing it to detect features of its surroundings. According to Moonshot Factory, the Everyday robot can in one day learn complex tasks like opening a door, which previously took about four months to program.
The robot, on top of its wheeled base, is a robotic arm called the ‘Gripper’, a multi-purpose attachment. Reportedly, the robots can currently perform multiple tasks such as sorting garbage, moving chairs in and out of conference rooms, opening doors, cleaning cafeteria tables.
While the initial goal for the company is to create a future where robots and humans can work in harmony in a closed environment, the long-term plan is to provide support to the elderly so that they can hold on to their independence longer.
