The news came after it was revealed that Rivian’s exclusivity for its 100,000 electric van order was expiring in 2023.
Electric vans to be part of Amazons fleet in 2023
The Stellantis-owned RAM is also expected to move to an EV for the first time by the end of the decade. Stelantis announced a big partnership with Amazon exclusively at CES, but hidden within them was a footnote surrounding the upcoming Promaster electric van of RAM that will launch in 2023. Amazon will become its first commercial customer. Notably, this comes after news emerged that Rivian’s exclusivity for 100,000 electric vans orders expiring in 2023 and that it would be free to sell its electric vans to third parties. This is notable because Amazon is also a major investor in Rivian.
Rivian expects to ship the first 10,000 units in 2022 and has already started delivering its electric vans to Amazon which have already been spotted in the wild. Amazon has reportedly ordered thousands of Promaster EVs as the e-commerce giant attempts to clean up its carbon footprint on the logistics side of its business.
This is not the first time Stelantis has partnered with Amazon. Amazon has had a different relationship with RAM, Fiat, Peugeot, and Citroen in the past. Interestingly, Fiat and RAM are part of FCA, which merged with PSA, which includes Peugeot and Citron, to form Stelantis.
Competitor to Ford e-Transit to launch in 2023
The RAM ProMaster EV is being billed as a competitor to the Ford E-Transit. “We have always known that our ambitious sustainability goals in our last mile operations will require multiple electric delivery van providers. We are excited about our relationship with Rivian, and whether it is the size of our investments, collaborations or orders. Doesn’t change anything about the timings,” said an Amazon spokesperson.
FCA was owned by the Agnelli family holding company Axor, which also separately owns Ferrari. After the merger with PSA, Axor remains a major stake in Stelantis, with John Elkan on board. Ferrari has become very close to Amazon for AWS over the years. Amazon is also working with Stellantis for AWS and STLA.

In fact, Rivian, which is owned 20 percent by Amazon, has even issued a statement on the deal — and said it bodes well for the industry. “The large fleets focused on electrification and carbon neutrality represent a victory for both companies’ mission. Amazon’s scale is unprecedented globally, and we expect them to buy vehicles from multiple providers – maintaining our own partnership with them.” , thriving and growing,” said Rivian on the announcement of the partnership between Amazon and RAM.
