Amidst tension with Pakistan, ALH fleet approved for limited operation for the army and IAF

New Delhi: After increasing tension with Pakistan, after the Pahgam attack, the ground fleet of advanced light helicopters (ALH) related to the Army and Air Force has been approved for operation. The fleet of the Navy and the Indian coast guard will remain on the ground.

The manufacturer of helicopters said in a statement, “Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv Army and Air Force versions have been approved for operations based on the recommendations of the blame (DI) Committee.”

Sources in the defense establishment said that no part is immediately converted into a fleet, but the defects inquiry committee has made some recommendations on check and quality parameters that operators should follow.

Sources said the preliminary inquiry into the January accident pointed to a fracture in the swashplate, an important component in the transmission system of the helicopter that translates the pilot input into a rotor blade motion.

In a fleet-wide inspection, some Navy and Coast Guard later covered cracks in the swashplate of ALH, especially those working in salty marine environment, raise concerns about physical fatigue and environmental stress.

Since its induction, the ALH platform has logged in to more than 450,000 flight hours and played an important role in transport, logistics, reconnaissance and search-and-rescue missions, especially in high-high and border areas.

However, it has also faced a disturbed security record with at least 28 accidents reported in the last 25 years.
